On 24 November 2012, Matthew Crawford will be at the Melbourne Tram Museum to discuss his journey to uncover the story of Joyce Barry, Australias first female tram driver.
His radio documentary on Joyces life was broadcast in September on Radio Nationals Hindsight program. For those who missed it, or wish to hear it again, the complete documentary can be downloaded from the ABCs web site.
Joyce, who was an experienced conductress, was selected to become a tram driver in 1956. But it took 19 years of campaigning before Joyces male colleagues finally agreed to train women to drive.
Friends, family, and anyone who enjoys an inspiring story about the fight for equality, are invited to join Matthew Crawford and the Friends of Hawthorn Tram Depot for an informal talk and Q&A session on the making of the program.
Dont miss this fascinating story at the Melbourne Tram Museum on our 24 November 2012 open day. Matthews presentation will commence at 11:30am. Light refreshments including tea and coffee will be served at the conclusion of the event.
Normal museum entry fees (gold coin donation) apply.
