On 1 November 1919, the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (M&MTB) took over the management of Melbournes cable tram network.
This was the first major step toward merging a number of smaller tramways into a single coordinated government agency.
Between 1919 and 1983, the Board and its dedicated people influenced, shaped, and enriched our city in many ways.
That legacy endures today, from the ambitious General Scheme plan to electrify and expand the tramways which shaped the current network; to Melbournes internationally renowned icon, the green and cream W Class tram.
The Board and its employees also played a crucial role in ensuring that Melbourne retained and expanded its trams at a time when many cities were scrapping their systems.
Please join us online and at the museum over the next year, as we celebrate and share the story of this remarkable organisation.
